Abstract
This thesis deals with the emotional and psychological development of Charlie, a Deaf teenager and the main character in Sara Nović’s True Biz. The story explores Charlie’s struggles with identity, relationships, and emotional conflict due
to childhood trauma. This study aims to analyze the symptoms, causes, and effects of disorganized attachment experienced by Charlie through the lens of Main and Solomon’s (1986) Disorganized Attachment theory. As a psychological-literary
analysis, this study focuses on the internal experiences of the character while also considering social and family influences. To analyze Nović’s True Biz, the writer uses psychological criticism, particularly attachment theory, as the main approach.
As for the research method, the writer uses library research to examine the narrative, dialogue, and character development. This research will try to answer two questions: (1) What are the symptoms of disorganized attachment shown by Charlie
in True Biz? And (2) What are the causes and effects of the disorganized attachment experienced by Charlie in the novel? The result of the data analysis shows that Charlie displays several symptoms of disorganized attachment such as emotional confusion, avoidance, and fear of rejection.
Keywords: Disorganized attachment, True Biz, trauma, psychological development, Deaf identity
