Abstract
Language is not only a tool for communication but also a medium for expressing emotions and intentions through speech acts. This research discusses expressive speech acts in the movie 13 Going on 30 and aims to analyze te types of expressive
utterances used by the characters along with the traits. I apply the Speech Act theory by J.R. Searle (1969), focusing specifically on expressive speech acts, including expressions of thanking, apologizing, lamenting, and others. This research uses a
qualitative descriptive method and purposive sampling to select relevant data from the movie script. I collect all the data by observing and transcribing the characters utterances. The analysis reveals that several kinds of expressive speech acts along with the character traits appear throughout the film. These expressive acts reflect the psychological states and interpersonal relationships of the characters.
