Abstract

This research thesis discusses the theme of power imbalances that leads to abuse in relationships, as depicted through Lily Bloom’s experience in Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us. The novel portrays the complexities of domestic abuse and emotional manipulation, where Lily is trapped in an abusive relationship with Ryle Kincaid. The objectives of the study is to analyze the characteristic of power imbalances, the causes of power imbalances, the forms of power imbalances and how Lily responds to power imbalances. The research method used is qualitative, focusing on literary analysis of the novel and secondary sources that discuss power in abusive relationships. The analysis uses a sociological approach to understand the dynamics of power in intimate relationships. The result of the data analysis reveals that emotional manipulation, gaslighting, and coercive control are key factors in sustaining the abusive cycle. Ultimately, the study shows how Lily’s journey
reflects broader issues of emotional dependence and the importance of reclaiming agency in the face of abuse.
Keywords: power imbalance, domestic abuse, coercive control, manipulation, unequal dependency, gaslighting
