Abstract
Conversational analysis on police interrogation discourse has been an interesting topic to explore, considering the great number of studies on it. However, there are limited numbers of studies that explore this topic on fictional work. The miniseries
Unbelievable (2019) portrays how the conversation between the detectives and the victim indicates a power imbalance in its interrogation process. This study aims to show how the turn-taking phenomena, especially turn allocation procedures,
latching, overlap, and silence, and the discourse patterns unveil the asymmetrical power relationship during the interrogation process. Using a conversation analysis approach with a descriptive qualitative method, this study examines selected scenes to understand how turns are taken and how questions are structured. The findings show that the detectives mostly use the “current speaker continues” strategy and declarative questioning form to control the flow of the conversation. These findings reveal an imbalance of power, where the detectives dominate the conversation. Compared to the real cases, this study shows that the patterns of the interrogation
discourse in fictional works follow the model in real cases. However, there are some creativities in utilizing each conversational feature to exaggeratingly build a dramatic atmosphere for a fictional work.
