Abstract
The Other Morgan presents a unique interaction between two characters who share the same name, Morgan Yardley. The movie’s dialogues contain numerous conversations with implicit meanings, making it an engaging subject for analysis.
This study aims to identify and classify the types of compliance and flouting of Grice’s maxims used by the two characters, Morgan 1 and Morgan 2, as well as to analyze the functions of the implicatures found in their dialogues. This study
employs a qualitative descriptive method . Data were collected through observation, focusing on utterances containing implicatures and related to Grice’s maxims. The results of the analysis reveal that both Morgan 1 and Morgan 2 employ compliance with and flouting of various Grice’s maxims for specific reasons, reflecting their respective communication strategies, such as delivering messages indirectly,
shifting topics, or using sarcasm to maintain their self-esteem. Furthermore, the functions of the implicatures found in their utterances uncover hidden messages and reveal their characteristics, where Morgan 1 tends to be more careful and
considerate in communication, while Morgan 2 is more direct and selective in sharing information.
