Abstract

This research explores the theme of mental toughness in Michelle Quach’s Not Here To Be Liked (2021), focusing on the protagonist Eliza Quan as she confronts sexism, social backlash, and personal disappointment. The objective of this research is to analyze the causes, the four components, and impacts of Eliza’s mental toughness. The research employs a qualitative method, applying both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic analysis examines character and conflict, while the
extrinsic analysis applies Dr. Peter Clough’s 4Cs model of mental toughness: control, commitment, challenge, and confidence. Data collection is conducted through library research. The primary source is the novel itself, while secondary sources consist of journals, articles, books, and theories, particularly those on mental toughness and psychological resilience. The results indicate that Eliza’s mental toughness is shaped
by several causes, including unexpected competition, losing the editor-in-chief position, backlash from peers, and societal expectations. Her resilience is reflected in the four components of Clough’s 4Cs model, which she embodies throughout her
struggles. The impacts of her mental toughness are evident in her emotional resilience, ability to reduce stress, and cultivation of a positive outlook, ultimately transforming her into a confident and inspiring leader who challenges gender
inequality.
