Abstract
This research thesis discusses the toxic relationship experienced by the main female character, Pippa Jones, in Zibby Owens's Blank. It applies literary analysis to examine the determinants, the types of toxic terror, and the effects on Pippa's psychological condition. It also analyzes the techniques Pippa uses to handle toxic relationships based on Lillian Glass's theory of toxic people in relationships. The research uses a qualitative method with a psychological approach in literature. The results show that Pippa faces different kinds of toxic relationships with those closest to her. These include her husband, her best friend, and her agency. The toxic interactions arise due to several determining factors, such as jealousy, hatred of
failure, and hatred of Pippa's personality after knowing her. The types of toxic terror from toxic people include “the smiling two-faced backstabber,” “the opportunistic user,” “the bitchy, bossy bully,” “the competitor,” “the control freak,” “the accusing
critic,” and “the emotional refrigerator.” These toxic dynamics negatively affect Pippa’s mental health, such as anxiety, toxic mood contagion, and bring out the worst in her. However, Pippa handles the toxic relationships around her by using
“the give-them-hell-and-yell technique” and “unplug technique.” The findings reflect the importance of recognizing unhealthy relationships that threaten people’s
psychological well-being in social life. Thus, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological dynamics of individuals, particularly women, in both literary works and real-life contexts.
