Abstract

This research thesis discusses the stages, causes and effects of grief experienced by the main character, Katy, in One Italian Summer, written by Rebecca Serle. The objectives of the research are to analyze the stages she undergoes and analyze the causes and effects of the grief she experiences in One Italian Summer. This research thesis uses a psychological approach supported by Five Stages of Grief Theory by Elizabeth Kübler-Ross and Kessler. This research thesis employs a library research
method. The primary data source is One Italian Summer novel, while secondary sources include scholarly articles and journals related to grief. The findings of this research thesis indicate that Katy’s grief stems from the loss of her mother. She experiences all five stages of grief, such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The effects of her grief include difficulty accepting the loss, intense emotional pain, challenges in adjusting to life without her mother, and efforts to
preserve her mother’s memory while moving forward.
