Abstract

This study aims to analyze idioms in the movie Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) based on its structure, communicative function, and contribution to character development. The approach used is descriptive qualitative with the theory of
Adam Makkai (1972) accompanied by Chitra Fernando (1996) as the basis of analysis. The results show that out of 14 idioms found, 10 are conventional idioms which mostly belong to the category of fixed lexical idioms, consisting of 4 tournure idioms, 2 phrasal verb idioms, and other forms. Functionally, idioms in
movies are used to convey opinions, emotions, maintain social relationships, and maintain the continuity of conversation. This function reflects the role of idioms as pragmatic communication tools in building interaction dynamics between characters. The findings also show that the use of idioms strengthens
characterization of the characters, through language choices that reflect the personalities, social settings, and emotions of the main characters. In addition, there are 4 contextual idioms (narrative-crafted idioms) that appear multimodally
through visual and gestural support, marking the expansion of idiom functions in the audiovisual narrative context. In this film case study, this research confirms that idioms function not only as linguistic expressions, but also as creative mechanisms that combine language, humor, action, and visuals to shape
characters and bring Jumanji's fictional world to life.
