Abstract

This research thesis discusses political hegemony in the United States. This research thesis focuses on the object and characters, Randall and Kate, in Don't Look Up movie (2021). The objective of this research thesis is to analyze the causes,
effects, strategies, and counter-strategies of political hegemony in Don't Look Up movie (2021). The writer uses a political sociology approach in writing this research thesis, using the theory of hegemony by Gramsci and the library research method
for data collection. The primary data of this research thesis is taken from the script of Don't Look Up movie (2021). The secondary data of this research thesis is taken from books, journals, and online sources. The result of this research thesis covers the characterization and conflicts of Randall Mindy and Kate Dibiasky, as well as the movie’s setting. The extrinsic aspects discussion covers the causes of the political hegemony by the United States government, such as the political authority,
economic power, and media control. Furthermore, the effects of political hegemony by the United States government are political legitimacy, prioritizing economic interests, and normalizing the state's narratives. The strategies used by the United States government to exercise political hegemony are controlling the media and celebrities' news and co-opting an intellectual. Meanwhile, the strategies used to counter-hegemony by Randall and Kate are building coalitions, resisting
government co-optation, and collaborating with celebrities.
