Abstract
This research thesis discusses the cultural appropriation done by Juniper Song Hayward as the main character in R.F. Kuang's Yellowface. The purpose of this thesis research is to analyze the causes, types, impacts, and solutions of cultural appropriation done by the main character. In writing this thesis, the author uses an anthropological approach by focusing on Young's theory of cultural appropriation. This thesis research also uses a library research method based on George's theory and divides the data into primary data, namely the novel Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, and secondary data taken from several books, journals, undergraduate thesis, and dissertations. The focus of the research includes analysis of intrinsic aspects of character, characterization, conflict, and setting. As well as extrinsic aspects of the cause, type, effect, and solutions of cultural appropriation done by June. The results show that June commits cultural appropriation because June has stolen other
cultural works, misrepresents Chinese culture, is only oriented towards economic potential, and has violated the privacy rights of the late Athena. The type of cultural appropriation that June has done is content, style, and subject appropriation of
Athena Liu's manuscript about Chinese labourers in World War 1. In conclusion, cultural appropriation in this novel reflects the exploitation of Chinese culture by the dominant group.
Keywords: cultural appropriation, content appropriation, style appropriation, subject appropriation, misrepresentation
