Abstract
Character's intentions and their dynamics with other characters on film can be reflected in the conversational implicature that surfaced in their dialogues. The family dynamics play a significant role in the film's narrative, which makes it
important to take a closer look into their conversation throughout the film. This study examines how conversational implicatures resulting from the flouting of Grice’s conversational maxims are used to reflect the family communication in
Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014). The study primarily focuses on the interactions among the central family figures who are Cooper, as the father; Murph, the youngest daughter; and Tom, the eldest son. Grice’s Cooperative Principle theory (1989) is employed to help reveal the implicatures and intentions that are not explicitly stated within their communication. To be more structured in identifying the family communication pattern, the framework from Koerner and Fitzpatrick’s Family Communication Patterns Theory (2002) is applied. The analysis revealed 30 utterances of maxim flouting. All four types of maxims are observed to have been flouted. The maxim of relevance is flouted the most with the total of 12
utterances, followed by the maxim of quantity in 10 excerpts, the maxim of quality with 5 excerpts, and the maxim of manner being the least flouted with only 3 utterances. The most reflected communication pattern was the pluralistic family
type with a total of 19 utterances and appeared in all four types of maxim flouting. Conversely, the consensual family type is not evidenced in all four-maxim flouting. These findings give insight into how the study of flouting the Cooperative Principle’s maxims can reflect the family communication in the depiction of the film’s central family characters.
Keywords : cooperative principle, conversational implicature, maxim flouting, Interstellar, family communication pattern.
