Abstract

This thesis explores the adolescent struggle for identity as represented through the character of Quentin Jacobsen in the film Paper Towns (2015), directed by Jake Schreier. Paper Towns (2015) is a coming-of-age film that examines themes of
identity, perception, and self-discovery. The narrative follows Quentin Jacobsen’s search for his enigmatic neighbor, Margo Roth Spiegelman, following her unexpected disappearance. Through this journey, Quentin is compelled to confront
societal expectations and undergoes significant personal growth in his pursuit of authenticity. This thesis applies Erik Erikson's theory of Identity vs. Role Confusion, which posits that adolescents must form a clear sense of self to avoid role uncertainty. Through library-based research, this study analyzes Quentin's character development as he goes through the process of searching for identity in society. The writer comes to the conclusion that Paper Towns (2015) effectively portrays the adolescent struggle for identity through Quentin Jacobsen’s journey of self-discovery amid societal expectations. The film illustrates how internal conflict, cultural pressures, and symbolic elements shape the search for authenticity during adolescence.
