Abstract
This research thesis discusses the reflection of American Individualism in the movie Anyone But You (2023) through the theory of Symbolic Interactionism. The aims of this research thesis are to the characteristics of American individualism depicted in the film, how Symbolic Interactionism reflects individualism through character interactions, and how American individualism affects the characters’ relationships. Using a library research method, the writer collects both primary data
from the movie script of Anyone But You and secondary data of this research thesis journal articles, books, and previous studies. The writer analyzes the data by employing the theory of Symbolic Interactionism, which focuses on the role of meaning-making, role-taking, and identity negotiation in social interactions. The results of this research reveal that Anyone But You (2023) reflects the characteristics of American individualism, such as autonomy, self-reliance, and personal freedom,
as seen in Bea’s journey toward independence and self-definition. The film also shows how individualistic values influence the dynamics of family, friendship, and romantic relationships. These findings emphasize that the movie portrays individualism not only as a cultural value, but
also as a personal process shaped through everyday social interactions.
