Abstract

Vitamin E and selenium are two important nutrients that play a role in
maintaining body health and supporting vital organ function. Based on their
content, vitamin E and selenium can be used as nutrients to improve duck egg
hatching performance. This study aims to analyse the microanatomy of the bursa
fabricius of duck embryos after the added of vitamin E and selenium to duck eggs.
This study employed a completely randomised design (CRD) consisting of four
treatments: K0 (no injection), K1 (injection of 0.1 mL of 0.89% NaCl), K2
(injection of 0.1 mL of vitamin E and selenium), and K3 (injection of 0.15 mL of
vitamin E and selenium). The treatments were added when eggs were 14 days old.
The eggs were incubated for 26 days, and the ducks were euthanised after hatching.
Bursa fabricius was fixed with 10% BNF solution and prepared for histological
examination. The measured variables included the number and diameter of plicae,
the number and diameter of follicles, epithelial thickness, lumen diameter, cortical
thickness, and medullary thickness. Data were tested and analysed using Analysis
of Variance (ANOVA) at a significance level of 5% (α = 0.05) and Kruskal-Wallis.
The results of ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis showed significant differences in the
number and diameter of follicles compared to the control (P<0.05). The variables
of the number of plicae, plica diameter, epithelial thickness, lumen diameter, cortex
thickness, and medulla thickness showed no significant differences (P > 0.05).
Based on the results of the analysis, it was concluded that in-ovo injection of
vitamin E and selenium in hybrid ducks has the potential to enhance growth and
optimise the development of the histological structure of the bursa fabricius
follicles.
