Abstract

ABSTRACT
Palupi, Priandini Ayu. 2025. "Self-Actualization of the Character Suzu Naito in the Film Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (Belle) Directed by Mamoru Hosoda (A Literary Psychology Study)". Thesis. Japanese Language and Culture Undergraduate Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Advisor: Budi Mulyadi, S.Pd., M.Hum.
Both film and psychology center on human experience. This study analyzes Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (Belle) for its depiction of Suzu’s growth through insecurity and identity search in both real and virtual worlds. This study aims to examine the representation of Suzu Naito’s self-actualization and describe the narrative elements of the film through the lens of Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, supported by Himawan Pratista's film narrative theory.
A qualitative research methodology and literature study were employed to collect and analyze relevant data. The findings reveal that Suzu Naito successfully fulfills all levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and ultimately reaches the highest stage of self-actualization. Her attainment of self-actualization is influenced by both intrinsic motivation and external support. Furthermore, she overcomes past trauma that previously hindered her ability to sing, resulting in increased confidence and courage.
Keywords: Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (Belle), Self-Actualization, hierarchy of needs, Abraham Maslow, film narrative structure.
