Abstract

Abstract

Matsuri is one of the elements of Japanese culture that is significant to the community's social
life. Hakata Gion Yamakasa in Fukuoka is one of the festivals that showcases active community
involvement, with the main highlight being the race of kakiyama carried by participants from
seven districts in Hakata. This research aims to describe how the values of shuudan shugi or
collectivism are manifested in the organization of the festival. The method used is a qualitative
approach with descriptive analysis of various event documentation by the organizers. The
research results indicate that this festival is not just a competition but also reflects the solidarity
and cultural identity of the Hakata community, where community members collaborate in the
preparation and execution of the festival and develop a sense of solidarity despite the context of
a modern society that tends to be individualistic. The value of shuudan shugi is represented
through group thinking (shuudan shikou) in decision-making, group life (shuudan seikatsu) in
the execution of rituals and task distribution, and group awareness (shuudan ishiki) represented
in the active participation of individuals in preserving traditions. Through this process, Hakata
Gion Yamakasa strengthens the cultural identity of the community and intergenerational social
solidarity. This research provides insights into the social dynamics within the festival and the
role of tradition in building group identity.
