Abstract
Background: Bad experiences in the internal family situation between father and mother, harsh treatment of parents towards children can have a negative impact on a child's psychological development. Trauma felt from childhood, adolescence, to adulthood causes a less harmonious relationship between children and parents. This study aims to see the extent of the psychological impact on children and the changes that occur in improving relationships with parents through emotional regulation.
Purpose: This study aims to see the extent of the psychological impact on children and the changes that occur in improving relationships with parents through emotional regulation.
Methods: The study used a case study method with three adult participants who experienced past trauma in the internal family environment, resulting in poor attachment relationships. Data were collected through interviews and observations, then evaluated using the "Checklist for Independent Healthy Achievement (CSM) and Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA)". The data were analyzed directly, and the results of the increase in scores were explained through textual analysis.
Results: The results of the research showed that the three clients experienced various traumatic experiences and this affected their character and behavior, such as being angry, rebellious, vindictive, hating, and so on. After the intervention, there was an increase in scores in recognizing and managing emotions, accepting the situation, and improving attitudes which were reflected in changes in children's behavior in approaching parents.
Conclusion: This study proves that emotional regulation is effective in building self-awareness of traumatic experiences through a more adaptive process of stages and methods, so that it is no longer a barrier to establishing better relationships between children and parents.
