Abstract

Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) often experience psychosocial challenges such as emotional distress, behavioral regression and impaired adaptability. It is caused by prolonged hospitalization and intensive treatment procedures. Occupational Play Therapy (OPT) is well-evidence therapy for decreasing psychosocial symptoms and improve hospital satisfaction. However, there is less research on analyze how OPT combining origami, flannel weaving and brain finger games can give positive outcomes on psychosocial. Thus, more research is needed to detailing how this therapy can be conducted in hospital settings for pediatric with ALL. This research design used a qualitative case study. This study conducted in May 2025 at Pediatric Ward, Kariadi Hospital. Two children with ALL given OPT observed during three session using visual anxiety scale and child development indicator checklist on social, emotional and independence domain. While, their mother involved in semi-structured interview and were analyzed thematically with two major themes: emotional response and behavior response. A reduction in anxiety was seen following treatment based on visual anxiety scale observation. Additionally, with observation checklist and qualitative feedback from their mother, there is positive outcomes on emotional expressiveness, adaptability, parental attachment, and learning enthusiasm. The study concludes that OPT is effective enhancing positive psychosocial response. It is a feasible, low-cost strategy that can be integrated into pediatric care settings, especially in developing country like Indonesia.
