Abstract

Art Therapy is known to affect the psychological status of children undergoing hospitalization positively. However, studies on the effect of art therapy on emotional regulation, especially in children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, are still limited. This study aimed to determine how art therapy affects emotional regulation in children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The research used a case study design with a purposive sampling technique. The study involved three respondents, children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, who were in the age range of 4-12 years. This study was conducted at a government hospital in Semarang City from April to May 2025. Demographic data were collected using a questionnaire based on patient medical records, while children’s emotional regulation was collected using the Emotional Regulation Checklist (ERC) questionnaire. Respondent responses were collected qualitatively using the interview method. The procedure for implementing art therapy in this study was carried out for three consecutive meetings, and 45-60 minutes were used for each meeting. The form of art therapy intervention includes sticking origami collages, clay creations, drawing and coloring. The data collected was then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. All children involved in this study had obtained written permission from their parents or guardians. The results of this study indicate that the application of Art Therapy improves the emotional regulation ability of children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Another positive response children show is an increase in behavioral responses and coping strategies toward a better direction. Further research can be conducted on more respondents through quantitative research studies.
