Abstract
The chemotherapy procedure in children with cancer can affect their level of comfort physically, psychosocially, spiritually, socially, and environmentally during treatment. The aim of this case study is to describe the application of Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory in nursing care for children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The method used in this study is a case study approach to nursing care based on Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory. Interventions provided were based on the principles of Kolcaba’s theory, including standard comfort, coaching, and comfort food for the soul. These interventions showed a significant improvement in comfort levels, as measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), in children with cancer. The implementation of Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory in nursing care for pediatric cancer patients receiving chemotherapy was found to be quite effective. Based on the results of interventions to manage nausea and vomiting in three managed cases in the Pediatric Inpatient Ward, 1st Floor, Dr. Kariadi General Hospital, it was found that the children’s comfort levels improved—from a VAS score of 2,6 before the intervention to 1,3 after the intervention. Kolcaba’s theory views patient comfort as a holistic concept. Nursing interventions using the approaches of standard comfort, coaching, and comfort food for the soul are expected to help children adapt to disturbances in their physical responses until they reach the highest level of comfort, known as transcendence.
