Abstract

“The Lincoln Lawyer” TV Series on Netflix, is an American legal drama with
Indonesian subtitles. In this matter, America follows the common law system, and
the Indonesian law system differs, which adheres to the civil law system. The TV
series may use some unfamiliar legal terms that lead to mistranslation, thus
misinforming the audience. Some legal terms in “The Lincoln Lawyer” TV Series
do not have references in Indonesian. This study aims to create a parallel corpus,
categorise types of legal terms, analyse translation techniques, and examine the
translation accuracy. The data is an English transcript and Indonesian subtitle of the
TV Series “The Lincoln Lawyer” which can be downloaded on Subscene.com. I
used Sketch Engine (an application to create a parallel corpus) and an assessment
form to rate the accuracy of the translation. I identify the legal terms in the data and
use a random sampling method before annotating the segments uploaded in Sketch
Engine. This study results in a parallel corpus of legal terms in Sketch Engine titled
“Lincoln Lawyer Legal Terms”. From this parallel corpus retrieval, I found the
dominant type of legal terms is the symbolic pure technical item with 121 segments
(54%). Thus, I found 15 translation techniques, with the dominant technique used
is the literal translation with 56 segments (24,9%). I got the accuracy rate from the
three raters as 68% accurate. Most of the terms can convey the idea of legal terms
in the target language, but it can be inferred that 32% of terms are still mistranslated,
meaning that around 1/3 of the subtitle needsto be improved. Thus, a parallel corpus
helps systematically analyse two different legal systems by putting two different
languages in parallel lines.
