Abstract
Every language has grammar rules for the usage of grammar. Grammar rules are
very important to express ideas correctly, especially in writing, so the readers can
understand the meaning that wants to be conveyed by the writer. The purposes of
this research is to analyze and classify types of student grammatical errors in writing
descriptive texts that were written by the students in the first semester of AKA
Bogor Polytechnics in the academic year 2022/2023. The writer used a descriptive
qualitative method to analyze the data and a quantitative method to calculate the
data. The writer chose 40 students to write the descriptive text about the chemical
hazard symbols. Theory from Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982) was used by the
writer to analyze the errors, and the theory from Brown (2007) to analyze the
sources of errors. Based on the findings and discussion, the writer finds that there
are 274 errors produced by the students that consist of 3 types of error, those are
misordering, omission, and addition. The dominant type of error is misformation
with 127 errors (47%). The next is omission with 116 errors (42%). Then, addition
with 31 errors (11%). Based on the calculated data of the questionnaire, the writer
found that the source of students’ error is intralingual transfer. It happens because
the students have a faulty or incomplete understanding of a target language. Then,
this problem can be overcome because of teacher’s role. The teacher can use the
appropriate method with the goal and students’ level. Using of some media such as
games and books also help increase students’ enthusiasm so they can understand
the material well.
