Abstract

The Dutch colonial influence in West Sumatra in the context of language contact
led to process of absorption of Dutch loanwords in Minangkabau language. This
research aims to uncover the phonological processes that occur in the absorption of
Dutch loanwords in Minangkabau and its phonological rules, and also the factors
influencing phonological processes in loan phonology. This research is descriptivequalitative research using observation methods and note-taking techniques. The
data is 160 Dutch loanwords in Minangkabau language taken from the book
“Sejarah Minangkabau, Loanwords, dan Kreatifitas Berbahasa Urang Awak”
written by Asnan (2020) and interviews with native speakers of Minangkabau
language. The analysis was carried out by applying Transformational Generative
Phonology by Schane (1974) to determine the phonological process and its rules,
while the Optimality Theory was used to explain the emergence of constraints. The
researcher found 23 phonological processes related to phonological changes and
changes in syllable structures. The factors that caused these phonological processes
are the difference in phonological system and syllable structure between Dutch and
Minangkabau, the tendency to simplify the production of sounds by native speakers,
and the naturalness and predictability of the Minangkabau language.
