Abstract
Among the English skills, reading skill is the most crucial problem in English learning.
The skill is important because the success of the study depends on the ability to read
different of texts. If they have a poor skill in reading, they may fail in the study such as
making an improvement in the learning process. Seeing the consideration, teacher is one
of the important aspects for achieving students’ goals in language learning. Teacher can
use interesting media and appropriate teaching technique to get students attention as well
as students interest in studying. This research aims to discover the process and
effectiveness of the jigsaw cooperative learning and snowball-throwing technique to deal
with descriptive text. This study used mixed method using observation, test and
interviews, and note-taking as the data collection tool and the research instrument. The
research population and as well as the sample of this study was 16 students from class X
from Madrasah Aliyah School One of Yogyakarta Regency. The data are analyzed
through Anova test and qualitative description. The result of this study showed that jigsaw
cooperative learning and snowball throwing technique have positive effect for the student
in dealing with descriptive text. The other findings showed that jigsaw cooperative
learning is more effective in teaching reading, especially in dealing with descriptive text.
