Abstract

The short film Pria is a film by Yudho Aditya that raises the issue of homosexuality.
Aris as the main character is under social pressure to meet the expectations of
masculinity that are considered ideal by society, so that for a gay person who does
not have these standards, Aris becomes a subordinate and marginalized party. The
aim of this research is to analyze the consequences of hegemonic masculinity which
affect Aris' life as a gay man who does not meet society's social construction
standards. The material object used is a short film Man by Yudho Aditya. The main
theory in this research is film narrative theory to analyze narrative elements and
dissect the characters of the main characters. As well as Raewyn Connell's
Hegemonic Masculinity theory to identify the hegemonic masculinity that
oppresses the main character. This research uses a queer approach because the main
character in this film is a homosexual. The results of this research show four
relations of hegemonic masculinity, namely 1) hegemony which comes from a more
dominant figure; 2) subordination which places Aris as a subordinate party because
he is dominated by Mr. Fausi as the dominant party; 3) complicity who made Aris
stay married out of respect for his mother; and 4) marginalization which puts Aris
on the sidelines so he still chooses to get married. These four relationships position
Aris as a man who does not have standards of masculinity because he lives in a
patriarchal cultural environment. The heterosexual marriage that Aris chose is a
criticism of society which means that someone with a different sexual orientation
does not have the freedom to make their life choices.
