Abstract
Alienation has become an intrinsic part of daily life, though it often goes
unrecognized despite its detrimental effects on those affected. This study aims to
present a comparison of the forms of alienation experienced by the main characters
in the films Budi Pekerti and Dear David, while also exploring the relationship
between these forms of alienation and the social reality of Indonesian society. A
qualitative approach is employed using Melvin Seeman's theory of alienation and
Henri Lefebvre's theory of space production as analytical tools. The results reveal
thirty-six instances of alienation across five aspects powerlessness,
meaninglessness, normlessness, self-estrangement, and social isolation in Budi
Pekerti and Dear David. The urban social contexts of Yogyakarta and Jakarta
emerge as key settings where alienation occurs.
