Abstract

The humanitarian crisis that occurred in Myanmar towards the Rohingya
ethnic group has pushed them to embark on a large amount of migration to several
Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia. Looking for asylum through boat
journeys, Rohingya refugees managed to reach and disembark in Indonesia
maritime territory. The number of boats keeps increasing by time, raising the
question of the overflowing number of boats as they migrate to Indonesia.
Furthermore, the fact that numerous refugees were easily leaving the designated
camp to embark another journey intensifies the question of Indonesia maritime
security.
This research involves interview and desk study to find out the cross-border
migration methods taken by the Rohingya refugees to reach Indonesian water
territory. Utilizing Christian Bueger’s maritime security conceptual analysis, the
data will be analyzed to discover how the migration experienced by the Rohingya
refugees may impact Indonesian maritime security as the disembarkation site.
Based on the analysis, the phenomenon of Rohingya cross-border migration is
perceived as a maritime threat and encourages Indonesia to take some actions upon
it.
