Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between democratic parenting style and academic procrastination among adolescents. The research is grounded in the growing phenomenon of academic procrastination, which can negatively impact students academic achievement, stress levels, and anxiety. One factor presumed to influence academic procrastination is parenting style, particularly the democratic parenting style characterized by guided freedom and open two-way communication. A quantitative correlational approach was employed with a sample of 167 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 1 Moga, selected through simple random sampling. The research instruments consisted of a democratic parenting scale and an academic procrastination scale, both developed based on established theories and tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The results showed a significant positive correlation between democratic parenting and academic procrastination (r = 0.372; p = 0.000), contradicting the initial hypothesis which predicted a negative relationship. These findings suggest that democratic parenting style does not significantly predict lower levels of academic procrastination among adolescents. This implies that other factors beyond parenting style should be considered to better understand academic procrastination in adolescence. This study implies that other factors beyond democratic parenting style should be considered in understanding academic procrastination behavior in adolescents, such as personality traits, learning motivation, and school environment.
