Abstract

South Africa, emerging from the apartheid regime with the adoption of its
new post-apartheid constitution in 1994, has progressively advanced its foreign
policy, particularly in its relations with Israel and Palestine. The democratization
process ushered in a new era marked by a strengthened commitment to international
solidarity and human rights, sharply contrasting with the country’s previous
apartheid-era policies. This research focuses on the upward trajectory of South
Africa’s support for Palestine under the current regime of President Cyril
Ramaphosa, analyzing the micro and macro level determinants that have
contributed to the strengthening of this diplomatic stance. Employing a qualitative
approach grounded in constructivist theory, the study examines how the legacy of
anti-colonial solidarity, political narratives, and evolving domestic and
international dynamics under Ramaphosa’s leadership have shaped South Africa’s
foreign policy. By exploring these interconnected factors, this research not only
traces the advancement of South Africa’s pro-Palestinian policy but also offers
insights into how historical legacies and contemporary political contexts drive the
development of foreign policy in transitional societies.
