Abstract

Football is one of the most popular sports in the world and is enjoyed by various groups. In Indonesia, football requires improvement in performance, especially for children. The football academy is a non-formal educational institution that plays an important role in developing talented athletes aged 5-18 years through a structured and sustainable training system. There are demands from the football academy for athletes to participate in all activities in the dormitory, so athletes who come from outside the region must migrate. There is self-awareness to learn to adjust to existing differences. Adaptation involves mental and behavioral responses to overcome pressure and challenges in a new environment. This study aims to describe the adjustment process in junior football athletes who are migrants who join the Young Indonesian Football Academy in Semarang. In the football academy environment, residence is a major factor in the adjustment process. Athletes who migrate must face various challenges, including adaptation to a new environment, cultural differences, and physical and mental stress in training. Using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, this study explores the subjective experiences of athletes in dealing with change and how they develop adaptation strategies. The results show that athletes experience stages of culture shock, but with social support from the academic environment and intrinsic motivation, they are able to adapt and improve their performance. This study provides insight into the factors that play a role in the successful adaptation of young athletes abroad.
