Abstract
The transition from fuel-powered into electric vehicles is believed to be one of the global strategies to reduce emissions and improve urban air quality, including in Indonesia. This phenomenon is increasingly evident with the significant increase in the number of electric vehicles in Semarang in recent years. This study aims to analyze the impact of the growth of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on carbon emissions in the road transport sector in Semarang. The Low Emission Analysis Platform (LEAP), the software used in this study, can analyze energy demand projections and support long-term scenario analysis. Projections are made up to 2060 to evaluate the impact of the electric vehicle trend on achieving government targets. Four scenarios are analyzed: (1) BAU (business as usual), where projections are made without new policy interventions; (2) BEV (battery electric vehicle), which targets an increase in the number of electric vehicles, showing a significant reduction, especially in PM 10 emissions; (3) EMX (energy mix), which focuses on electricity energy mix but does not result in significant emission reductions; (4) COM (combination), which combines the BEV and EMX scenarios, having the lowest emissions by the end of the scenario period, emphasizing that a comprehensive strategy is most effective for achieving long-term emission reductions. On the other hand, the use of batteries in BEVs presents the challenge of battery waste, which is classified as hazardous and toxic waste (B3), requiring sustainable management through remanufacturing and recycling strategies within the domestic industry.
