Abstract
Yopparai is the activity of drinking large amounts of alcoholic beverages such as
Sake or beer and becoming so intoxicated as to be in the "drunk stage". This research
uses qualitative methods by using data and theories to understand the phenomenon of
Yopparai in Japan. The literature review method was also used with sources from the
internet, scientific journals, and books. The author utilized observation, literature
study, interviews, and document study to collect data. The Instagram account
@drunkinjp is an example that shows the public perception of drinking alcohol on
social media. The purpose of this study is to explain the phenomenon of Yopparai in
Japan, the representation of Yopparai in Japan through the content of the @drunkinjp
Instagram account, and the analysis of the @drunkinjp Instagram account in
reflecting the Yopparai tradition in Japan as well as the public perception of Japan by
representing Yopparai. The visual representation shown in the account illustrates the
phenomenon of Yopparai in Japan. An interview with the pengelola of the
@drunkinjp Instagram account also showed that public perception of drinking culture
in Japan can change through social media. This research has outlined the factors that
influence Japan's drinking culture and its implications for Japanese society in general
and highlighted the digital representation of the Yopparai in Japan through social
media platforms such as Instagram, specifically the @drunkinjp account. One
interesting finding in this research is Muscel Girl, which is the world's only fitness-
themed bar served by muscular women. However, it is important to remember that
this research is only a part of a broader discussion about Yopparai or Japanese
drinking culture. There are many other aspects of this phenomenon that need to be
studied further to better understand its overall impact and implications.
