Abstract
This research thesis analyses Olanna Ozobia and Odenigbo’s, Kainene
Ozobia and Richard Churchill’s power of love against disloyalty as represented in
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Half of a Yellow Sun. The objectives of this
thesis are to explain the disloyalty committed by Odenigbo towards Olanna Ozobia,
the disloyalty committed by Richard Churchill towards Kainene Ozobia, to analyze
how Odenigbo and Olanna Ozobia maintain their love, and how Richard Churchill
and Kainene Ozobia maintain their love. This thesis uses psychological approach,
whereas the method of data collection uses library research. This thesis uses theory
of character by Forster, characterization by Abrams, and conflict by James Potter,
and theory of love by Fromm, kinds of love by Dunn and Fromm, loyalty and
disloyalty by Royce and Keller. The results of this research indicate the power of
love on two couples against disloyalty. It can be seen from the way the betrayed
characters forgive their lover's infidelity. The cause of forgiveness of this betrayed
characters are, firstly, their lovers are their true love, secondly, a knock from the
heart to raise a child resulting from an affair with motherly love, thirdly, the power
of love and affection from sibling relationships that is not easily destroyed. The two
couples both struggle to maintain their love in order to reach a happy ending
together.
