Abstract
This study aims to understand the pleasure experienced by Indonesian horror movie
audiences despite the often frightening and disturbing content. The research focuses on
exploring the unique elements within the subgenres of Indonesian horror films that
contribute to this pleasurable experience. The research method employed is
Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) using a qualitative approach through
in-depth interviews with four informants who are fans of the horror film genre. The
results indicate that the pleasure derived from watching horror movies arises from a
combination of factors, such as shared emotional engagement, compelling narratives,
visually suspenseful elements, and psychological dimensions that challenge critical
thinking. Furthermore, the horror movie-watching experience is influenced by social
contexts, such as watching with friends or family, as well as interactions through digital
platforms and social media. This study concludes that the pleasure of watching horror
movies is not merely a reaction to fear but also a result of active engagement with the
narrative, visuals, and emotional dimensions presented by the film.
Key Words : Indonesian Horror Films, Pleasure Experience, Phenomenological
