Abstract

A migrant crisis is an important problem faced by the many countries in
recent years. This thesis discusses the border crisis between Belarus and Poland.
Driven by strained relations between Belarusia and EU, the Belarusian government
pushed Middle Eastern migrants into Union to cripple the economy. European
Union considers Belarusia as an authoritarian state due to both the interception of
Ryanair and the forced withdrawal of Krystsina Tsimanouskaya. At the beginning
of the migrant crisis, Belarus promoted an easy access into Europe through their
visa to attract the Middle Eastern refugees who suffered under the Islamic State.
This migrant crisis caused a state lockdown in areas nearby the border. The conflict
escalated with the migrants – armed by Belarusian border patrol – attempted to
break through barbed wire fence erected by Polish border guards, marking the
beginning of violent struggle between the Middle Eastern migrants and Polish
border guards. Further into the crisis, the Polish government continued the standoff
at its border which resulted in the building of a new wall on their border with
Belarus. The researcher aimed to determine the main reason for Polish blockade of
this wave of migrants due to the crime against humanity done during the crisis. The
methodology used to conduct research is literature review and systematic review
methods. The thesis is analyzed using Compliance Theory, with Logic of
Consequences, Securitization, and International Regime as supporting concepts.
The result found during the research clearly show Polish obidience towards EU as
the reason for their decision to push the migrants from its territory. This thesis is
meant to raise the awareness regarding simillar crisis and its importance in
International Relations.
Keywords: migrant crisis, border crisis, hybrid threat.
