Abstract
In this global era, the urgency of mastering the English is increasing and requires more
attention. Besides opening access to a wider range of information sources, mastering
English can also enhance communication abilities, self-confidence, and provide
opportunities to expand relationships abroad. According to the 2023 English Proficiency
Index released by EducationFirst, Indonesia ranks 79 out of 113 countries with a score of
473, categorized as ‘Low Proficiency’. Additionally, based on a survey conducted by the
author among 33 Applied Foreign Language students English stream batch 2020
Diponegoro University, 42.4% of respondents have not yet reached B1 level, which is the
standard expected of students. This study focuses on addressing the English proficiency
needs of students to achieve B1 level. The output of this study is the development of a
digital game-based learning in the form of an application named Ladder Up, which adapts
the classic board game of snake and ladder. This study was conducted using the Research
and Development method, and using a 4-point Likert scale involving students who aim to
achieve B1 level and have already on that level. The study was tested with experts and
research subjects to assess aspects of ‘First Impression and Usefulness’, ‘The Features and
Content’, and ‘Design and Usability’. Based on the usage testing results, it can be
concluded that all respondents gave positive feedback towards the development of this
application, and it was considered engaging and beneficial as a learning media to enhance
English proficiency up to B1 level.
