Abstract

The thesis on the adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of Lawang Sewu in Indonesia is a comprehensive exploration of the intricate balance between preserving historical and cultural significance while promoting sustainability and continuity between the past and present. The study commences by underscoring the paramount importance of comprehensively understanding the historical, architectural, and cultural significance of Lawang Sewu. This foundational understanding sets the stage for a deep dive into the complexities of adaptive strategies for heritage buildings.
Through an extensive analysis of theories and previous studies related to adaptive reuse, the thesis sheds light on the nuanced considerations and challenges inherent in preserving cultural heritage while meeting the evolving needs of modern society. By integrating qualitative techniques and interdisciplinary principles into the research methodology, the study aims to provide nuanced and valuable insights into the preservation, adaptation, and sustainability of Lawang Sewu. This approach ensures a holistic and multifaceted understanding of the adaptive process.
The exploration of the adaptive process of Lawang Sewu encompasses a thorough examination of its historical background, existing building regulations, condition assessment, and proposed re-adaptation strategies. By delving into these aspects, the thesis offers a comprehensive view of the complexities and opportunities involved in revitalizing historical structures like Lawang Sewu.
Moreover, the proposed re-adaptation strategy, design, and use of Lawang Sewu are meticulously crafted to strike a delicate balance between historical preservation and modern functionality. The design proposal for an annex building is a testament to this approach, aiming to not only enhance the historical significance of Lawang Sewu but also cater to the contemporary needs of visitors and occupants. This research contributes significantly to the field of adaptive strategies for heritage buildings, offering a detailed roadmap for preserving and reimagining Lawang Sewu in a sustainable and culturally significant manner.
