Abstract

Indonesia is home to three species of orangutans: Sumatran, Bornean, and Tapanuli, all of which are critically endangered due to significant habitat loss. Effective conservation requires not only comprehensive legal frameworks but also robust enforcement and active community involvement. This research examines the legal
arrangements for protecting orangutan habitats in Indonesia, assessing their conformity with International Environmental Law, and evaluates the government's efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 15, which focuses on life on land.
Using a normative juridical method, the study found that Indonesia has enacted laws and strategies that align with international standards. However, these regulations do not specifically mention orangutan species, leading to less effective conservation efforts. The study suggests revising the law to include explicit references to
orangutans and improving enforcement and community engagement to enhance conservation outcomes and better achieve Sustainable Development Goal 15. The findings emphasize the need for revising the laws, regulations, and national strategies relating to conservation to include the mention of orangutan species. The
improvement of legal enforcement in orangutan habitat areas is also important to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 15. To protect the orangutan habitat conservation area, the involvement of the local community is important to ensure the preservation of orangutan and their habitat.
