Abstract
Two studies were conducted in order to contribute to diversifying the pillars of understanding on
the interaction of gender to the concepts of emotional expression. Designed to understand both its key
differences and its modalities, this study utilizes a quasi-experimental method, with a mix of both
controlled stimulant testings by an emotionally-inducing advertisement and key interviews based on
populations of highly educated female and male, in two cities of Indonesia. Incorporating a cognitive
approach towards understanding the phenomenon, Emotional Information Model (EIM) is utilized as the
main link in grasping the process and cause of differences between the two genders in responding towards
emotional messages. Highlighting the range of basic emotions (Anger, Sadness, Happiness, Fear,
Surprise, and Disgust) in grasping its key differences in the face of gender norms and constructs.
Our result had revealed that across a range of emotions, female and male utilizes the same yet
also different expressions in order to conform to his or her own modalities and conformation. In our first
study, we found that there exists a significant multivariate association of gender towards the six-range
emotion, with a notable difference in the ‘disgust’ dimension. Our second study also reveals the broader
nuance on such differences, most notably in ‘recognizing’ emotional cues, with female providing a more
rich description of a certain emotional situation, even going beyond the context of the stimulant through
personal reflection and experiences, whilst our male counterpart providing a more highly-contextualized
descriptions. The norms of these key differences, highlights the performative value of gender in
influencing how emotional messages are captured and processed.
