Dini and the Novel Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (A Comparative
Study)”. Thesis for S-1 Indonesian Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences,

The object of research used in this research is the novel Pada Sebuah Kapal by
Nh. Dini and the novel Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The purpose of
this study is to describe (1) the structural elements of the novel Pada Sebuah
Kapal by Nh. Dini (2) structural elements of the novel Scarlet Letter (3)
similarities and differences in the structure of the novel Pada Sebuah Kapal and
the novel Scarlet Letter (4) a comparison of norms and culture in the novel Pada
Sebuah Kapal and the novel Scarlet Letter. The research method used is
descriptive qualitative using a comparative literature perspective. The data
collection technique was carried out by means of document studies, namely the
source of the data was taken from the novel Pada Sebuah Kapal and Scarlet
Letter.
Based on the research that has been done, it can be concluded that the structure of
the novel Pada Sebuah Kapal and the novel Scarlet Letter includes: (1) theme and
message; (2) plot; (3) characters and characterizations; (4) setting, and (5)
author’s perspective. Judging from the structure, these two novels have
similarities and differences. The similarities lie in the aspects: the themes, these
two novels raise the issue of women's love to betray their marital
commitment (having an affair); characterizations, have some similarities in
character. The difference between the two novels lies in the aspects: the message;
plot; characterizations, have several different characters; setting, and author’s
perspective. Comparison of norms and culture lies in the religious norms of
different cultural views.
