Abstract

This study discusses the existence of the myths of Wungu Lake and
Comberan spring, which are famous folktales in Nglanggeran Village. The myths
revolve around Comberan spring, a sacred place believed to have spiritual power,
which originates from a magical lake called Wungu Lake. The decline of oral
tradition, the loss of community belief in stories, and the absence of official
manuscripts or books documenting traditional oral stories in the village have
contributed to the disappearance of these folktales. As one effort to preserve these
folktales, the researcher proposes the creation and development of a picture
storybook entitled “Picture Storybook of Wungu Lake and Comberan Spring”. The
storybook was created by adapting it into visual storytelling techniques that can
pique the curiosity of children and be used as literacy materials for the younger
generation of Nglanggeran Village. The research method used in this study is the
Research and Development (R&D) method, specifically the 10-stage model
proposed by Borg and Gall. The product in the form of a picture storybook is
designed and be validated by academic and cultural experts to ensure its compliance
with academic principles and adjusted cultural values. Based on this study, the
picture storybook has been validated and successfully tested for its operational
conditions with the target readers, especially children in Nglanggeran Village.
