Abstract

Self Made: Inspired by The Life of Madam C.J. Walker is a series directed by Kasi Lemmons based on the true story of a black woman named Madam C.J. Walker, which depicts her journey as a dark-skinned woman who struggles to achieve her rights and dreams. This study uses the sociological and feminist approach, and social equality and gender equality theory by Fourie et al. (2015) and Louise A. Tilly (1989). The objectives of this study are to analyze the narrative element, including the intrinsic aspects (character, setting, events) and extrinsic aspects, as well as the cinematography (camera distance, camera angle, mise-en-scène, sound) in Self Made: Inspired by The Life of Madam C.J. Walker series and the extrinsic aspects show the challenges and the efforts of Madam C.J. Walker to achieve social and gender equality. To analyze the series, the writer uses the library research method in collecting the data to support the discussion. The result of this study shows that Madam C.J. Walker undergoes several unfair treatments as her struggle comes from black men and black women. In the way to get equality,
the series portrays the efforts she makes with the support of other black women to be treated equally by people in society.
