Abstract

The word "literally" can have different meanings and functions for each person.
Many Indonesians use the word "literally" in their daily communication, including
writing messages on Twitter menfess. This study aims to analyze the function of
using the word "literal" in Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) on Twitter
menfess accounts, specifically @moviemenfes, @kdrama_menfess, and
@Marvfess based on Calhoun (2015). The method used in this study is a qualitative
methodology. This research identifies that from the three menfess accounts used,
137 tweet data use the word "literally" in menfess posts. The most used function of
the word "literally" in the three menfess accounts is to strengthen the force of an
utterance by marking speaker commitment. Meanwhile, the functions not found in
the data on the three menfess accounts are the "literally" function to indicate 'word
for word' translation and the "literally" function to arbitrate between two literal
expressions. This study reveals that the speech communities in the three menfess
accounts are influenced by language development. They frequently encounter
English-language films and dramas, leading them to unconsciously incorporate the
word 'literally' into their daily conversations.
