Abstract

Keraton Surakarta also known as Surakarta Hadiningrat palace is one of the leading
tourist attractions that has many interesting culture, history and legends. Because of
these reasons the Keraton Surakarta is in demand by tourists, not only local tourist
but also tourists from various countries. There are many foreign tourists who visit
the Keraton, but the number of tour guides who have foreign language skill is still
limited, especially the English language. The aims of this research is to design an
English guidance book that contains information and guidance that is able to assist
tour guides in providing explanations about the object attractions in Keraton
Surakarta. The method used in this research is the Research and Development
(R&D) according to Sugiyono (2013) which consists of 10 stages. However, in this
research only using 8 stages, because the resulting product will not be produced on
a large scale. The 8 stages include potential and problem, data collection, product
design, design validation, design revision, product testing, product revision and final
product. The data collection techniques used are observation, interview,
documentation and literature study. The research instrument used are questionnaire
and validation form. The result of this research is a guidance book entitled "English
Guidance Book for Tour Guide at Keraton Surakarta" which equipped with some
barcodes containing the audio from the examples of the tour commentary.
