Abstract

Surakarta Palace is a historical building in Central Java that is well-known worldwide.
Surakarta Palace has a lot of history and culture that can be explained to everyone,
including foreign tourists visiting Surakarta Palace. However, the low English ability of
the tour guides became a big obstacle for tourists to find out information about history and
culture of Surakarta Palace. Therefore, this research is conducted on the necessities of
foreign tourists who want sources of information. Booklets are a source of written
information that can be a solution for the Surakarta Palace to provide complete information
about its history and culture. This study aims to explain the importance of an English
booklet to facilitate foreign tourists in obtaining complete historical and cultural
information about the Sukakarta Palace and to describe the process of designing an English
booklet to facilitate foreign tourists in obtaining complete historical and cultural
information about the Sukakarta Palace. This study uses research and development
methods, using eight steps: (1) Potential and Problems, (2) Data Collection, (3) Product
Design, (4) Design Validation, (5) Product Revision, (6) Product Testing, (7) Product
Revision, and (8) Final Product. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews,
observations, and document analysis. The result of the study is an English booklet that can
facilitate foreign tourist in obtaining complete historical and cultural information about
Surakarta Palace. The booklet also has a barcode containing audio that includes voice about
the contents and a video about dances and events at Surakarta Palace, which will help
foreign tourists understand the booklet’s contents pleasingly.
