Abstract

The process of self-disclosure of children who are pregnant out of wedlock encounters many communication obstacles, this is because the condition of being pregnant out of wedlock is something that deviates and is something that parents really avoid to happen to their children. The dynamics of expressing oneself to parents about sensitive and deviant matters is a burden in itself so that it becomes an obstacle in communicating it, the obstacles experienced by children include psychological barriers. The purpose of this research is to find out the process of children to their parents related to the condition of being pregnant out of wedlock. This study uses qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach. The theory underlying this research is Communication Privacy Management (CPM) described by Petronio (2002). The data collection technique used was in-depth interviews, with research informants, namely 4 young women who had experienced pregnancy out of wedlock. The results showed that there were psychological barriers that hindered children from communicating their pregnancy out of wedlock to their parents. As for conditions after the incident, children whose parents accept their child's condition cooperatively tend to take constructive corrective steps. For children whose parents respond to reject the child's condition, they tend to experience depression and pressure and there are more destructive actions, namely aborting the fetus. Because of the psychological communication barriers felt by the child, there is a pause from the incident with the time for disclosing the child's condition to his parents. Of the four informants, two informants continued to marry and the other two did not continue to marry. As for the significant other parties who knew for the first time, most of them were friends of the respondents. In one subject, parents first found out about conditions that were not detrimental because the respondent's mother saw the test-pack used by the child. The most important factor triggering pregnancy out of wedlock in adolescents is the lack of parental love and attention, peer association, media films, and lack of early childhood sex education. The conclusion from this study, there were psychological barriers felt by the four informants who wanted to communicate the condition of their pregnancy outside of marriage to their parents, marked by feelings of fear and tended to delay the big notification to parents.
