Abstract

Third Culture Kids (TCK) are children in the age range of 0–18 years old who live in various countries other than their original country because they follow one of their parents to work or study abroad. In facing various challenges and dynamics in adjusting to various countries and cultures, peer social support is an important factor in helping TCK to adjust. The purpose of this study is to see the role of peer social support in TCK. This study uses qualitative method with phenomenological approach. Participants were selected using purposive sampling technique with the criteria of being female/male, having lived abroad at the age of 0–18 years old (minimum in one country), and currently aged 18–25 years old. This study used semi-structured interviews which then analyzed with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis technique. The results show that TCK faced various dynamics and challenges during his adjustment period, but these could be handled well due to the presence of peers as support system that helped them to survive adjusting abroad. Even though various challenges were faced, TCK perceived these challenges with gratitude and were seen as beneficial.
