Abstract

ABSTRACT
Saputra, Maulana Dufanno, 2022. "DISCRIMINATION AGAINST OKINAWA PEOPLE: CAUSAL FACTORS, FORM, AND EFFORTS TO OVERCOME IT", thesis, Japanese Language and Culture, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Dewi Saraswati Sakariah, S.S., M.Si as the thesis advisor.
The purpose of this research is to find out the factors that cause discrimination against the Okinawan people, the forms of discrimination they feel, as well as the efforts made by the community to overcome them with the concept and theory of discrimination by Theodorson & Theodorson, the theory of factors that cause discrimination by Azizi bin Yahya, and the theory of discrimination type by Pettigrew.
The method used in this thesis is the historical study method, in which the researcher collects data and interprets the symptoms of events that occurred in the past which critically depicts the whole truth of events or facts to help find out what to do in the future. The data collection method used to find information about history and discrimination against the Okinawan people is a library study technique, as well as a descriptive analysis method as a method of presenting data.
It was found in this research that there are three factors that cause discrimination against the Okinawan people, namely, historical factors, competition and exploitation factors, and socialization style factors. Okinawan people also receive direct discrimination treatment such as giving bad stigma which causes bullying and difficulty getting marriage approval, acts of sexual violence against women, and racism. Apart from direct discrimination, Okinawan people are also subject to indirect discrimination, such as the elimination of characteristics, the prohibition of marriage between Americans and Japanese, and burdensome regulations. The community also seeks to resolve acts of discrimination that have already been mentioned, such as making regulations regarding the prohibition of bullying, discussing with families about marriage approval, passing legal avenues to address sexual violence against women, establishing exclusive associations for Okinawans in the United States, and demonstrations.
Keywords: the history of the Okinawan people; Japanese society; the people of the United States; discrimination
