Abstract

Pandega, Koesa Adjie. 2022. "Evangelization of Japan by Europeans in the Sengoku Period". Thesis. Bachelor of Japanese Language and Culture Education Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Diponegoro University. Advisor Dewi Saraswati Sakariah, S.S., M.Si.
The purpose of this research is to find out how the process of evangelization of Japan by Europeans occurs along with the impact of the arrival of Christianity and Europeans in Japan in the Sengoku and early Edo periods.
The method used in this thesis is qualitative method with descriptive model and historical approach with literature review. The theory used in analyzing this research is Emile Durkheim's functionalism theory.
Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that most daimyo in Japan, especially in Kyushu, accepted Christianity and allowed Christianity to be taught in their domains because of the weapons brought in by the agreement with the Jesuits. Accepting Christianity meant gaining exclusive access to trade with Europeans as well as access to firearms, tanegashima. But in the process there were exceptions for daimyo such as Otomo Sorin, Arima Harunobu and Omura Sumitada who were considered to be faithful Christians. In addition, it can be seen that the arrival of Christianity and Europeans brought many changes to Japan in the Sengoku and early Edo periods, especially in the political, economic and military fields.
